David Woodland

David Woodland’s photographic portfolio features sculptural installations of natural objects, dramatic filmic landscapes and skies, surreal macro images, poetic moments from Italy and France, evocative images of the English countryside and the scenic splendor of the Australian coast.

David is an Art Director and Matte painter for feature films, in visual effects. He has worked on films such as Lord of the Rings, Moulin Rouge, Kingdom of Heaven, The Painted Veil, Australia, The HBO Rome TV series, and the academy award winning Happy Feet. Through this work David has gained advanced technical skills.

A passion for photography and an interest in composition, form, texture and lighting developed to become an integral part of David’s artwork for film.

Since 2006 David has focused on photography as his primary artistic expression. He considers photography to be a challenging subset of film, where the story has to be told in one frame

Working in London, Sydney, Melbourne and Perth and travelling in Britain, Italy, France, Spain and the USA has both inspired, and provided material for, David’s creative and filmic approach to his photographic images

Holding a degree in Fine Art and Design, David’s background prior to the film industry was as a successful ceramic artist in Western Australia and a production designer for theatre and contemporary dance. His artwork is represented in the Australian National Gallery and he was the recipient of a Churchill Fellowship.

David Woodland’s studio is based in Sydney. David can be commissioned for photographic assignments and is available for photographic art direction.
